Insomnia Relief
Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally in the brain. Its release is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light. Melatonin is important in regulating sleep and maintaining circadian rhythm; the body's natural time clock.
Natural melatonin production decreases with age and the decrease is associated with sleep disorders. Melatonin is currently indicated for insomnia and jet lag as it decreases sleep latency (time to fall asleep) when taken at bedtime.
Shift workers and elderly people with insomnia may also benefit from melatonin supplementation as it avoids the hazards and side effects of prescription sleeping pills.
Melatonin may also be used in children with sleeping difficulties and to promote sleep in children treated with stimulants for ADHD.
